In Sierra Leone, political leaders, notably Milton Margai, campaigned for autonomy and independence. These discussions culminated in a historic decision on April 27, 1961. After more than 150 years of British occupation, Sierra Leone became an independent state. On that date, the country achieved sovereignty while remaining a member of the Commonwealth, with a political system modeled on the British system. The first few years were relatively stable, but then came ethnic tensions, political crises, coups d’état, and the Sierra Leone Civil War, which lasted from March 23, 1991, to January 18, 2002. These various difficult situations resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and significantly hampered the overall development of this beautiful country.

Since then, the country has been building itself up relentlessly. Its medium-term national development plan for the period 2024-2030 aims to maintain political and ethnic stability. Development focuses on the structural transformation of the economy, food self-sufficiency, job creation, and sustained economic growth with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate between 4 and 7%.

On this day of commemoration, CAFRAD shares in the joy of this former British colony. CAFRAD encourages the concrete initiatives of Sierra Leone’s senior decision-makers, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, H.E. Mr. Julius Maada Bio, particularly efforts toward food self-sufficiency, human capital development, women’s empowerment, and a commitment to both regional stability and South-South cooperation.

CAFRAD, established in 1962 to modernize administrations, strengthen governance capacities, and promote development research in African states, remains committed to supporting institutional capacity building, in line with continental ambitions for structural transformation and sustainable development. This will undoubtedly contribute to accelerating the inclusive and promising development trajectory initiated in Sierra Leone.

CAFRAD wishes the Republic of Sierra Leone a happy 65th Independence Day celebration on the path to resilience, comprehensive, and sustainable development.

[/vc_column_text][stm_spacing lg_spacing=”80″ md_spacing=”80″ sm_spacing=”30″ xs_spacing=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1602029642150{margin-bottom: -60px !important;background-color: #ffc80a !important;}”][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”Envie D’être Renseigné Sur Tous Les événements du CAFRAD?” h2_font_container=”font_size:24px|color:%23000000|line_height:24px” h2_use_theme_fonts=”yes” shape=”square” style=”flat” add_button=”right” btn_title=”Nos événements” btn_style=”flat” btn_color=”theme_style_2″ btn_align=”right” btn_i_align=”right” btn_i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-chevron-right” use_custom_fonts_h2=”true” btn_button_block=”true” btn_add_icon=”true” css=”.vc_custom_1602029653171{margin-bottom: 0px !important;background-color: #ffc80a !important;}”][/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading source=”post_title” use_theme_fonts=”yes” el_class=”no_stripe”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1777922185018{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”] On Monday, April 27, 2026, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Sierra Leone’s independence, the Director General of the African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD), Dr. Coffi Dieudonné Assouvi, and all the staff extend their sincere and warmest congratulations to His Excellency

[121
