Despite progress made in many countries in prevention and regulation, tobacco continues to cause millions of premature deaths each year and is a major risk factor for many non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.

Beyond its impact on health, tobacco use represents a considerable challenge to economic and social development. The costs associated with medical care, lost productivity, and premature deaths weigh heavily on national economies. The most vulnerable households are often the hardest hit, exacerbating social inequalities and hindering sustainable development efforts.

The African continent faces particular challenges in this area. While some regions of the world are experiencing a gradual decline in tobacco consumption, Africa remains a target market for the tobacco industry due to its young population and rapid demographic growth. This situation calls for increased vigilance from governments, public institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners.

Protecting younger generations is now a top priority. Marketing campaigns, new nicotine products, and strategies designed to make tobacco more appealing represent challenges that public authorities must address with effective policies for awareness, education, prevention, and control. Safeguarding the health of young people also means preserving the human potential essential for the continent’s economic and social transformation.

In this context, public administrations have a central role to play in the design and implementation of evidence-based public health policies. Strengthening regulatory frameworks, rigorously enforcing laws relating to tobacco advertising and consumption, improving prevention programs, and supporting smoking cessation initiatives are essential tools for sustainably reducing the prevalence of smoking.

Furthermore, the effects of tobacco are not limited to human health. The cultivation, manufacture, distribution, and consumption of tobacco products also have significant environmental impacts, notably through deforestation, soil and water pollution, and the accumulation of toxic waste from cigarette butts. The fight against tobacco thus contributes to achieving environmental sustainability goals and protecting natural resources.

In line with its mission to promote good governance, strengthen administrative capacity, and foster sustainable development in Africa, CAFRAD encourages African governments and public institutions to continue their efforts toward inclusive, effective, and resilient health policies. The health of citizens is a key driver of human development, economic performance, and social stability.

World No Tobacco Day reminds us that building a healthier future requires collective mobilization and coordinated action at all levels. Governments, public institutions, international organizations, the private sector, researchers, health professionals, educators, and citizens are called upon to join forces to promote healthy lifestyles and protect current and future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco.

On this occasion, CAFRAD reaffirms its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 3 relating to health and well-being, and renews its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening the capacities of African public administrations in the design and implementation of public policies serving the well-being of populations.

On this World No Tobacco Day, CAFRAD calls for collective awareness and a renewed commitment to a healthier, more productive, more resilient and more prosperous Africa.

[/vc_column_text][stm_spacing lg_spacing=”80″ md_spacing=”80″ sm_spacing=”30″ xs_spacing=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1602029642150{margin-bottom: -60px !important;background-color: #ffc80a !important;}”][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”Envie D’être Renseigné Sur Tous Les événements du CAFRAD?” h2_font_container=”font_size:24px|color:%23000000|line_height:24px” h2_use_theme_fonts=”yes” shape=”square” style=”flat” add_button=”right” btn_title=”Nos événements” btn_style=”flat” btn_color=”theme_style_2″ btn_align=”right” btn_i_align=”right” btn_i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-chevron-right” use_custom_fonts_h2=”true” btn_button_block=”true” btn_add_icon=”true” css=”.vc_custom_1602029653171{margin-bottom: 0px !important;background-color: #ffc80a !important;}”][/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading source=”post_title” use_theme_fonts=”yes” el_class=”no_stripe”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1781081268899{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”] On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, celebrated annually on May 31 at the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), the African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD) joins the international community in highlighting the importance of the fight against tobacco use and

[121
