The African Centre for Administrative Training and Research for Development (CAFRAD) extends its warmest greetings to the people of South Africa on the occasion of Independence Day, celebrated annually on April 27, marking the dawn of a new era in the country’s history: the official end of apartheid and the establishment of an inclusive democracy in 1994.

This historic day, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates South Africa’s first free and democratic national elections, which saw the election of Nelson Mandela as the country’s first Black president. It symbolizes the triumph of justice over oppression, equality over segregation, and hope over fear.

A Pan-African Symbol of the Struggle for Human Dignity

For African nations and the continent as a whole, the liberation of South Africa remains a powerful symbol of resilience, solidarity, and popular sovereignty. South African history reminds us that the quest for just and inclusive governance is a noble struggle, requiring courage, dialogue, and collective commitment.

Governance, Leadership, and Development

As part of its mission to promote good governance, public ethics, and transformational leadership in Africa, CAFRAD pays tribute to the South African institutions that have worked, since 1994, to consolidate democracy, reform public administration, and build a modern state in the service of its citizens.

South Africa’s journey illustrates the capacity of a people to reinvent itself and build resilient institutions, respecting diversity, the rule of law, and citizen participation. These values are at the heart of CAFRAD’s vision for an innovative and inclusive African administration that serves sustainable development.

African Solidarity

Through this tribute, CAFRAD reaffirms its commitment to supporting member states in their efforts to strengthen administrative capacity, promote accountable governance, and foster institutional transformation in the service of the African people.

CAFRAD renews its solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa and wishes them a joyful celebration of Freedom Day, in unity, peace, and prosperity.
