CAFRAD Extends Warm Congratulations to the Republic of The Gambia on the Occasion of Its Independence Day

The African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD) joins the Republic of The Gambia in celebrating the 61st anniversary of its independence on 18 February 2026. On this occasion, the Director General, Dr. Coffi Dieudonné ASSOUVI, the staff, and all CAFRAD Member States extend their warm congratulations to the Government and people of The Gambia for their remarkable achievements and their steadfast commitment to progress, national stability, and sustainable development, and wish them a happy national day.
February 18, 1965 remains a memorable date in the country’s history. On that day, The Gambia attained independence, bringing an end to British colonial administration and fully affirming its national sovereignty. This decisive milestone paved the way for the building of a State founded on the principles of governance, justice, social peace, and development.
Since independence, The Gambia has pursued a path marked by sustained efforts toward institutional consolidation, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting political stability. Over the decades, the country has undertaken reforms aimed at modernizing its public institutions, improving the quality of services delivered to citizens, and fostering a more transparent, efficient, and inclusive administration.
Located in West Africa, surrounded by the Republic of Senegal and enjoying strategic access to the Atlantic Ocean, The Gambia occupies a unique geographic position that facilitates regional and international exchanges. It plays an active role within regional and continental organizations, notably the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, contributing to the dynamics of integration, cooperation, and the promotion of peace across the African continent.
As a CAFRAD Member State, The Gambia attaches particular importance to strengthening administrative capacity and professionalizing the civil service. The development of an efficient administration constitutes an essential lever for achieving national development objectives, improving public service delivery, and strengthening trust between the State and its citizens.
On the occasion of this national celebration, CAFRAD reaffirms its commitment to supporting The Gambia in its continued efforts toward administrative modernization, institutional transformation, and the promotion of effective, innovative, and inclusive public governance in the service of sustainable development.
Happy Independence Day to the Republic of The Gambia!
