May 20 Commemoration: CAFRAD Congratulates Cameroon on its Journey of Unity and Progress

Cameroon’s National Day, commonly known as Unity Day, is celebrated annually on May 20. It commemorates the abolition of the federal system in favor of a unitary state, a historic decision taken by referendum in 1972. The 2025 edition marks the 53rd anniversary of this landmark event in the country’s political history, under the theme: “Army and Nation United for a Cameroon Focused on Peace and Prosperity”.

On this solemn occasion, the Director General and all CAFRAD staff extend their warmest congratulations to His Excellency the President of the Republic, the Government, and the people of Cameroon. This celebration is a testament to the progress made by Cameroon in its quest for national cohesion, democratic stability, and sustainable development.

The festivities traditionally take place in the streets of Yaoundé, the capital, notably through military parades and civic events, reflecting the unity and diversity of the Cameroonian people.

Cameroon is one of the active member states of CAFRAD. It notably served as the organization’s general director for a decade under the leadership of Professor Stéphane Monney Mouandjo. The country continues to play a central role in the life of the organization, actively contributing through its availability, attentiveness, and responsiveness.

CAFRAD, as a pan-African institution dedicated to building administrative capacity on the continent, welcomes the strong and fruitful cooperative relations it maintains with the Republic of Cameroon. It reaffirms its commitment to supporting the country in its efforts toward governance, institutional transformation, and comprehensive and sustainable human development.
