Sierra Leone Independence Day – April 27, 2025

On this April 27, 2025, as the Republic of Sierra Leone commemorates the 64th anniversary of its independence, CAFRAD is pleased to share in the pride of this former British colony, which continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience in promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

CAFRAD supports the combined efforts of national policymakers, citizens, and the international community, who are implementing appropriate, concrete measures and working together to build a more prosperous future for Sierra Leone.

Indeed, for the past 23 years, the country has been rebuilding, renewing both its courage and its commitment in the face of devastating health crises that have hindered its progress. These include the Ebola epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely affected the country’s economy and exacerbated social inequalities. During these crises, businesses collapsed, agriculture, tourism, and the informal sector were heavily impacted, leading to currency depreciation and rising inflation.

This period of deep uncertainty and multidimensional poverty has strengthened the resilience of the people of Sierra Leone and prompted a collective effort to rethink governance and pursue genuine progress—economic, infrastructural, and social—in line with the aspirations of this ECOWAS member state.

In his address to the nation, the President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, stated that the country has made “progress” while also acknowledging that many “challenges remain,” particularly in establishing a culture of ethics and accountability—essential pillars of productivity, economic growth, and social justice.

This ongoing national effort has given rise to bold reforms, attracting foreign investment, improving the exchange rate, and increasing tourism revenues. The Government has firmly committed to transforming the country’s economy and improving the living conditions of its people in a lasting and meaningful way.

CAFRAD stands ready to contribute to this noble endeavor of repositioning the Republic of Sierra Leone on the international stage—through support in implementing reforms, designing and evaluating public policies, and especially, in developing human capital.

CAFRAD remains hopeful for Sierra Leone’s continued and tangible progress. With its rich history, abundant and sought-after natural resources, sizeable population, and enlightened leadership, Sierra Leone possesses strategic assets that can undoubtedly pave the way toward inclusive and sustainable development in this beautiful African nation.
