World Intellectual Property Day 2026: “Ready, Set, Innovate!”

On the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, celebrated annually on April 26, CAFRAD joins the international community in reaffirming its commitment to the effective and equitable protection of intellectual property on the African continent.

For the 2026 edition, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has chosen the theme “Intellectual Property and Sport: Ready, Set, Innovate!”, highlighting how creativity and innovation, supported by intellectual property rights, enable the world of sport to remain vibrant, dynamic, and accessible to all, everywhere.

Intellectual Property at the Heart of Innovation

Intellectual property is the foundation of any creative and innovative economy. Patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs are essential tools that enable creators, researchers, and businesses to protect their work, obtain fair compensation, and continue to innovate. This year, by focusing on the world of sports, WIPO provides a concrete illustration of how intellectual property permeates all sectors of human activity and is a crucial driver of collective progress.

Persistent Challenges in Africa

Africa possesses considerable creative and innovative potential—traditional knowledge, cultural industries, technology startups, and local innovations. Yet, this potential remains largely under protected and undervalued. National intellectual property systems remain fragile in many countries, awareness among economic and cultural stakeholders is insufficient, and regulatory frameworks are often ill-suited to the demands of the digital age. Counterfeiting and the undervaluation of local creations pose significant obstacles to innovation and investment, requiring strong mobilization from African institutions and their partners.

CAFRAD’s Contribution

Building on its mission to strengthen administrative and institutional capacities in Africa, CAFRAD is actively involved in promoting effective intellectual property governance. It integrates this theme into its training programs for African policymakers and public officials, contributes to the production of knowledge useful for institutional reforms, and fosters the exchange of best practices among member states.

CAFRAD also places these issues within a broader perspective: the continent’s digital transformation. To this end, the International Forum on Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transition, Energy and Connectivity in Africa, scheduled for May 11–13, 2026, in Rabat, will provide a unique opportunity to address the unprecedented challenges posed by digital technology in the area of intellectual property: data protection, rights to creations resulting from artificial intelligence, and African digital sovereignty.

Perspectives

World Intellectual Property Day 2026 is a reminder that creativity and innovation deserve protection to continue to flourish. For Africa, making intellectual property a true driver of development requires bold reforms, strengthened institutions, and deepened regional cooperation.

CAFRAD reaffirms its commitment to supporting African states in this endeavor, placing intellectual property governance among the strategic priorities for a continent that stands to gain everything from valuing and protecting its creative intelligence.
