CAFRAD reaffirms its firm position in favor of a pluralistic and independent press freedom, a guarantee of democracy and a driver of development, on World Press Freedom Day

In a globalized world undergoing rapid change, marked by digital technology, artificial intelligence, the blurring of distinctions, and the volatility of information, press freedom must be a lever for disseminating true, accurate, and reliable information. Access to information, to a plurality of information sources, is a fundamental right that cannot be subject to any constraint except for the purpose of defending press freedom and the free flow of information.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, and in light of the data published by the relevant authorities, CAFRAD reaffirms its position in favor of press freedom and independence.
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on May 3. Proclaimed by UNESCO in 1993, this Day aims to highlight the fundamental importance of freedom of expression and the essential role of the media in democratic societies.
Freedom of the press is a fundamental right enshrined in the United Nations framework through Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It guarantees everyone the right to seek, receive, and impart information without interference or subversion.
Journalists play a crucial role in informing citizens, exposing abuses of power, and promoting transparency. Without a free press, maintaining a just and equitable society becomes difficult.
Despite its importance, freedom of the press remains threatened in many parts of the world. Journalists are victims of censorship, intimidation, and even violence. According to organizations such as Reporters Without Borders, hundreds of media professionals are imprisoned or harassed each year for doing their jobs.
Modern challenges also include disinformation, fake news, political and economic pressures, and the dangers associated with conflict coverage.
Each World Press Freedom Day highlights a specific theme. These themes allow us to reflect on current issues, such as:
• The safety of journalists;
• Media independence;
• The impact of digital technology and social media;
• The fight against misinformation;
This Day is an opportunity:
• to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty;
• to raise public awareness of attacks on press freedom;
• to encourage governments to uphold their commitments to freedom of expression.
World Press Freedom Day reminds us that access to free and reliable information is a precious, yet fragile, right. Defending press freedom means defending truth, democracy, and justice.
The CAFRAD Directorate General is committed to working effectively with all stakeholders to guarantee this freedom of the press on the African continent.
