On the occasion of the 66^th anniversary of the Republic of Benin’s accession to national and international sovereignty—celebrated on August 1, 2026—Dr. Coffi Dieudonné Assouvi, Director-General of CAFRAD, extends his warm and sincere congratulations to His Excellency Mr. Romuald Wadagni, President of the Republic, Head of State, and Head of Government, as well as to all Beninese institutions and the people of Benin.

He conveys his most respectful wishes for peace, health, and happiness to His Excellency the President and the Government, while acknowledging the maturity of Benin’s democracy. This democracy reached a new milestone during the presidential election held on April 12, 2026, which took place without any violence or legal and political challenges.

The new President of the Republic, inaugurated on May 24, 2026, is intensifying diplomatic efforts to strengthen good-neighborly relations and the country’s influence in Africa and across the globe.

CAFRAD, a Pan-African intergovernmental organization, appreciates the comprehensive transformation process undertaken by the Republic of Benin and reaffirms its readiness to support the country in the complex process of public governance that benefits its citizens.

The country’s democracy has been further strengthened by the creation and upcoming installation of the Senate—a new institution resulting from the constitutional revision of December 2025—which is set to become the cornerstone of the Republic’s institutions.

Benin’s National Day is celebrated annually on August 1^st. This day commemorates the country’s attainment of independence on August 1, 1960, following the period of French colonization. It is one of the country’s most important celebrations, symbolizing the freedom, national unity, and sovereignty of the Beninese people.

Festivities generally begin with an official ceremony attended by state officials. They include:

–  The raising of the flag and the playing of the national anthem;

–  A military and civilian parade;

–  Cultural performances showcasing Beninese dances and traditions;

–  Concerts, public entertainment, and fireworks displays in various cities across the country.

The national holiday is a time for all Beninese people to come together. It serves to:

–  Pay tribute to the heroes of independence;

–  Strengthen unity and solidarity among citizens;

–  Promote the values ​​of peace, patriotism, and development;

–  Highlight Benin’s cultural and historical heritage.

Benin’s national holiday is a day of great historical and patriotic significance. Every August 1^st, the people of Benin celebrate their independence in a spirit of pride, unity, and hope. This celebration reminds all citizens of their responsibility to contribute to their country’s progress, peace, and development.
