INDEPENDENCE DAY OF THE UNION OF THE COMOROS 2026

On the occasion of the Independence Day celebration of the Union of the Comoros this July 6, 2026, Dr. Coffi Dieudonné ASSOUVI, Director General of the African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD), along with the Centre’s entire staff, extend their warm congratulations to His Excellency Mr. Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, the Government, and the people of the Comoros.

The Union of the Comoros is celebrating the 51st anniversary of its independence—a historic date marking the country’s attainment of national and international sovereignty on July 6, 1975, which brought an end to the period of French colonial rule. This day serves as a major national holiday and a moment of unity for the entire nation.

Official ceremonies are being held across the country to mark the occasion, particularly in the capital, Moroni, and on the various islands of the Union. Civil and military authorities are participating in flag-raising ceremonies, wreath-laying, parades, and various commemorative events honoring the architects of independence. Cultural, artistic, and sporting activities are also enlivening the festivities, while the national flag is proudly displayed as a symbol of the unity, freedom, and sovereignty of the Comorian people.

Independence Day is also a special opportunity to pass on the national memory to younger generations. Schools, public institutions, the media, and civil society organizations are highlighting key milestones in the struggle for independence and paying tribute to the men and women who contributed to the country’s emancipation.

Beyond the official ceremonies, this day embodies a spirit of national unity and social cohesion. Families and communities come together for festive activities, cultural performances, traditional dances, and public events that celebrate the richness of Comorian cultural heritage. The festivities also serve as a reminder of the values of peace, solidarity, national unity, and social cohesion that form the foundations of the Republic.

Independence Day thus remains a symbol of national pride, collective memory, and commitment to the ideals that led the Union of the Comoros to freedom. In 2026, the country continues its efforts toward sustainable development, the modernization of public administration, economic diversification, and the strengthening of governance, with the aim of fostering inclusive growth and improving the living conditions of its people.

CAFRAD, a pan-African intergovernmental organization, extends its best wishes to this member country, hoping that the celebration will further strengthen bonds of national solidarity, consolidate peace and stability, stimulate socio-economic development, and contribute to building an increasingly high-performing public administration. CAFRAD also takes this happy occasion to reaffirm its commitment to supporting efforts to modernize and reform public administration in the Union of the Comoros.

Happy Independence Day to the Union of the Comoros and to the entire Comorian people—united and resolutely looking toward a future of peace, prosperity, and development!
