Message from the Director-General of CAFRAD on the occasion of African Union Day

The African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD) extends its warmest congratulations to the African Union and all its Member States on the occasion of African Union Day, celebrated on September 9, 2026.
It is worth noting that two significant dates are associated with the history of African integration.
May 25, celebrated as Africa Day, commemorates the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa in 1963, which became the African Union in 2002. This day honors the unity, solidarity, and shared aspirations of African peoples. These celebrations acknowledge the progress achieved by Africans while inviting them to reflect on the common challenges they face within a global context. It is celebrated both in Africa and across the world.
September 9 marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Sirte Declaration (Libya) in 1999 by African Heads of State and Government; this declaration launched the process leading to the creation of the African Union (AU) to replace the Organization of African Unity (OAU), while accelerating the continent’s political and economic unity. This date underscores the commitment of African states to stronger continental integration and shared governance. African Union Day highlights modern political and economic integration, development, and the realization of the goals of Agenda 2063. It offers a prime opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to a united, prosperous, peaceful, and integrated Africa, driven by effective, inclusive, and innovative public governance.
On this auspicious occasion, CAFRAD renews its commitment to supporting African institutions in capacity building, the modernization of public administrations, and the promotion of governance that fosters sustainable development, in line with the vision of Agenda 2063.
On this symbolic day, CAFRAD wishes the African Union every success in pursuing its noble mission in the service of the African people.
Happy African Union Day!
