On the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, observed annually on July 18, the African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD) joins the international community in paying a heartfelt tribute to one of the greatest figures in modern history, whose extraordinary journey continues to inspire people and leaders across the globe.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009, this day commemorates the birth of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. It celebrates the universal values ​​he embodied throughout his life: freedom, justice, human dignity, reconciliation, dialogue, tolerance, and respect for fundamental rights.

After spending twenty-seven years in prison for his struggle against apartheid, Nelson Mandela demonstrated to the world that forgiveness, national reconciliation, and dialogue are essential tools for building peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous societies. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to equality and justice continue to serve as a benchmark for current and future generations.

For CAFRAD—a pan-African intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting excellence in public governance and capacity building within African administrations—Nelson Mandela’s legacy holds special significance. The principles he championed—integrity, accountability, transparency, inclusion, and service to the public interest—lie at the heart of the values ​​guiding the Centre’s work as it supports member states in developing public administrations that are more efficient, innovative, and responsive to citizens’ needs.
